My elementary placement was at Upper Adams Intermediate School in Upper Adams School District. With Ann Gerlitzki, my cooperating teacher, I taught 4-6th grade General Music, Chorus, and an Adaptive Music class.
4th Grade: Recorder, Note Name Review (Treble Clef), Cultural Arts
5th Grade: Work Songs Unit (folk music), Dotted Quarter-Eighth Rhythm, Cultural Arts
6th Grade: Music Through Time Unit, Eighth-Two Sixteenth/Two Sixteenth-Eighth Rhythm, Cultural Arts
This unit I created focuses on work songs from different cultures and means of work. Throughout the unit, students will embark on a journey where they encounter various cultural traditions and time periods, examining lyrics, rhythms, melodies, and forms these work songs take.
This is a fun, active, and engaging unit - students connected multiple work songs with other classes they've taken.
Rather than work songs being the focus, this unit can serve as a means to explore numerous musical concepts such as call and response, round, rhythms, intervals, and part singing in an informal setting. I prioritized the cultural/historical significance of work songs instead of finding a balance between musical concepts and these significances.
This unit I created showcases the development of music over time through the lens of various intruments. Each learning experience will act as a deep dive into a specific instrument family and how it has evolved over time. This lens shift aims to make music history more relatable to students who may find a disconnect when focusing on classical music.
Students especially enjoyed learning about the instruments they could play or see. The synthesizer learning experience was the most hands on and engaging, utilizing Chrome Music Labs.
An issue I came across was what version of certain instruments do we want to focus on. For instance, the bone flute was certainly invented many years earlier than the modern concert flute. Which is more important for students to know?
I appreciated the refreshing take on a Music History unit; however, next time I teach this unit, I will strive to connect more traditional concepts throughout the entire unit, such as the musical periods.
