• What is the role of the piece in the concert? Is it the opener, closer, reach piece, crowd-pleaser?

• How long is the piece? Does it fit within your allotted time for the concert? 

• Is their rhythmic vitality to the piece? Does each part have engaging/challenging rhythms?

• Is the piece melodically logical, fitting the overall harmony and style? 

• Does the piece move from one idea to another with no cohesion? 

• Has the piece stood the test of time? Will you be coming back to this piece in four years? Eight?

• What is the educational value of the piece? What can you teach the ensemble with this piece?

• Does the piece have any specific instrumentation needs, and can they be met with your ensemble?
